Some sessions are effortless from the very beginning—and this one with Makenna and Jackson was exactly that. They drove all the way from Alabama to Tennessee for their engagement session, and while Makenna had originally envisioned a wildflower field, we discovered something just as beautiful. On the banks of a local lake in Hendersonville, TN, we found lavender still in bloom, and then ended the evening in a dreamy field of wispy grass. It was the perfect backdrop for a couple who describes themselves with three simple but powerful words: Friendship, Laughter, and Love.
Makenna and Jackson first met in high school and became friends, but it wasn’t until college that their relationship turned into something more. They’ve been inseparable ever since, building a relationship that thrives on fun, joy, and being together no matter the situation.
One of their favorite ways to spend time together is simple: going out to dinner, then coming home to bake cookies and watch movies. Those everyday rhythms are what make their connection so strong—and what made photographing them such a joy.
Jackson planned the proposal during a family Christmas trip to Switzerland and France. While skiing in Châtel, France, he surprised Makenna on the slopes. Pretending to take a fall, he waited until she skied over to him—and then pulled out a ring.
Her reaction? Absolute shock and delight. “My jaw dropped, I stabbed my ski poles into the snow, and said, ‘Are you being serious!?’” she shared. With only her parents in on the secret the night before, it was an unforgettable surprise that turned a snowy slope into a forever memory.
Makenna and Jackson are most excited about celebrating with their closest family and friends at a majestic creek setting. The details they’re planning—like a live string quartet during dinner—perfectly reflect their love for both elegance and meaningful experiences.
But even more than the big day itself, they’re looking forward to the everyday joy of marriage: living together, building a life side by side, and spending all their days together.
Though wildflowers weren’t in bloom anymore, Makenna had a vision in her head of soft, natural portraits—and the lavender along the riverbank plus the golden wispy grass ended up being exactly what she had been hoping for.
“I think the photos in the lavender and wispy grass felt the most like ‘us,’” she said. “It was the perfect example of how laid back and go-with-the-flow we both are.”
And truly—that’s what makes this couple so special. Whether it’s skiing in France, sharing cookies and movies at home, or dancing in a Tennessee field, their love feels joyful, grounded, and full of life.
If you’re recently engaged and dreaming of portraits that feel authentic to your story, I’d love to help you capture them in a way that’s timeless and true to who you are. Whether by the riverbanks of Hendersonville, in a wide-open Gallatin field, or at another meaningful Tennessee location, your engagement session can be a reflection of your love story.
