Should You Have a Summer Wedding?

Here Are the Pros + Cons to Help You Decide

If you’re dreaming of a warm-weather wedding day, you’re not alone. Summer is one of the most popular times of year to get married—and for good reason! The longer days, vibrant florals, and outdoor reception possibilities are hard to resist.

But summer weddings also come with some hidden challenges that are worth thinking through before you book your date.

Whether you’re freshly engaged or finalizing your season, here’s a clear, honest look at the pros and cons of a summer wedding—so you can plan with confidence and peace of mind.

☀️ PROS OF A SUMMER WEDDING

1. Longer daylight = more time for photos

Summer gives you the gift of light. With the sun setting later in the evening, you have more flexibility in your timeline—and more opportunity for natural-light portraits, golden hour glow, and relaxed transitions between events.

2. Lush greens + vibrant florals

Nature is fully alive in the summer. Trees are green, flowers are blooming, and the world around you feels warm and colorful. If you’re dreaming of bright bouquets, garden portraits, or a ceremony surrounded by greenery, summer delivers.

3. Travel is easier for many guests

School’s out. Vacation days are more available. Summer is a natural time for friends and family to travel, making it easier for out-of-town guests to attend and extend their stay if they’d like to.

4. Outdoor celebration potential

Al fresco dinners, twinkle lights, sparkler exits, lawn games, sunset cocktails—if any part of your wedding vision includes the outdoors, summer is your safest season for it.

5. Classic, joyful vibes

There’s just something about summer. It brings a feeling of nostalgia, warmth, and playfulness that naturally elevates the energy of the day.

🌡️ CONS OF A SUMMER WEDDING

1. Heat and humidity can be tricky

Depending on where you live, summer temperatures can be intense. Heat affects hair, makeup, flowers, attire, and overall comfort. Outdoor portraits might need to happen earlier in the day—or later in the evening—to avoid the harshest sun.

2. It’s peak season = peak demand

Summer is the busiest time of year for most venues and vendors, which means you’ll likely be paying premium prices and navigating limited availability. If you’re set on a specific location or team, book early!

3. Bugs, sweat, and other realities

Let’s be honest—mosquitos love a summer party, and sweat stains are real. Having backup fans, bug spray, water stations, and a cool-off plan for the wedding party can make a huge difference.

4. Guest travel conflicts

While summer travel is easier for some, it’s busier for others. Guests may already have vacations booked or family reunions scheduled, especially around holiday weekends.

5. Some venues aren’t built for summer

If your ceremony or reception is at a historic or outdoor venue, check for things like shade, airflow, and A/C access. Your guests (and your florals) will thank you!

💡 My Take as a Photographer?

Summer weddings are beautiful—but they require margin.
Build in extra time. Plan for comfort. And don’t underestimate how much little details (like cold towels, shade, or fans) can elevate everyone’s experience.

If you’re choosing summer for the light, the outdoor space, or the joyful feel of the season—do it! Just make room in your timeline and planning to care for your people (and yourself) along the way.

Your wedding doesn’t have to be perfect to be powerful—it just has to be thoughtfully yours. 🩵
